Delft University of Technology Characterization and comparison of capillary pore structures of digital cement pastes

چکیده
More and more studies are based on digital microstructures of cement pastes obtained either by numerical modelling or by experiments. A comprehensive understanding of the their pore structures, therefore, becomes significant. In this study, the pore structure of a virtual cement paste (HYMO-1d) generated by cement hydration model HYMOSTRUC 3D is characterized. The pore structure of HYMO-1d is compared to the one of CT-1d that is reconstructed by using X-ray computed tomography technique (CT scan). Both HYMO-1d and CT-1d have the same porosity. Various parameters are taken into account, viz., the specific surface area, the pore size distribution (PSD), the connectivity and the tortuosity of waterfilled pores. Regarding the PSD, two concepts (i.e., the ‘‘continuous PSD’’ and the ‘‘PSD byMIP simulation’’) are adopted. The ‘‘continuous PSD’’ is believed to be a ‘‘realistic’’ PSD; while the ‘‘PSD by MIP simulation’’ is affected by the ‘‘throat’’ and ‘‘ink bottle’’ pores. The results show that HYMO-1d and CT-1d exhibit a similar curve of ‘‘continuous PSD’’, but distinct curves of ‘‘PSD by MIP simulation’’ and different specific surface areas. A lower complexity of the pore structure of HYMO-1d is indicated by a higher tortuosity of water-filled pores with reference to CT-1d. This study indicates that the comparison of pore structures between the digital microstructures should be based on multiple parameters. It also gives an insight into further studies on digital microstructures, i.e. transport properties of unsaturated materials.

Pore Structure Changes of Blended Cement Pastes Containing Fly Ash, Rice Husk Ash, and Palm Oil Fuel Ash Caused by Carbonation
In this paper, the effects of carbonation on pore structure of blended pozzolan cement pastes were investigated. Ordinary Portland cement OPC was partially replaced with ground palm oil fuel ash POA , ground rice husk ash RHA and classified fine fly ash FA . The strength, total porosity, specific surface area, and pore size distribution were tested. In general, incorporation of pozzolans increa...

The influences of nano-ZrO2 (NZ), nano-TiO2 (NT), nano-Fe2O3 (NF) and nano-Al2O3 (NA) additions on properties of the fresh and hardened cement paste in comparison with the fine cement paste were experimentally studied. Mini slump and flow cone tests were conducted on fresh cement pastes. Moreover the compressive and tensile strength of hardened cement paste were measured. SEM micrographs and XR...

Abstract: This work was designed to investigate the simultaneous effect of both water-to-cement (W/C) and polymer-to-cement(P/C) ratios on flexural strength of type V Portland cement pastes containing polyvinyl alcohol. The obtained resultsconfirmed the strong effect of W/C-ratio on the effectiveness of the added polymer so that there exist optimum valuesfor both W/C and P/C-ratios. Pastes prep...
متن کاملInfluence of alkalis on porosity percolation in hydrating cement pastes
Loss-on-ignition (LOI) measurements and low temperature calorimetry (LTC) are used to study the properties of hydrating cement pastes with various quantities of alkalis. In addition to the well-known acceleration of early age hydration and ‘‘retardation’’ of later age hydration, the alkalis are observed to have a significant effect on the percolation of the porosity in the hydrating systems, as...
متن کاملA Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Pulsed Field Gradient Study of Self-Diffusion of Water in Hydrated Cement Pastes
The results of oneand two-dimensional H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulsed field gradient (PFG) diffusometry studies of water in white cement paste with a water-tocement ratio 0.4 and aged from 1 day to 1 year are reported. The study shows that the NMRPFG method is primarily sensitive to the capillary porosity. Data is fit on the basis of a lognormal pore size distribution with pore size d...
